12.13 How To Become Who You Want To Be
I suppose you get the idea of choosing a role model for your
purposes. Now you want to become more effective, finally. How do
you do it? This will sound easy, but it isn’t: in order to become who
you want to be you have to alter your point of view first.
You have to detach yourself from yourself. Well, that sounds weird,
doesn’t it? What I mean is this: while you’re making progress you’ll
encounter a lot of problems which might make you want to stop the
whole thing and return to your ‘normal’ life.
You are who you are and changing this is impossible. Our ego
‘thinks’ we are better off with our ‘old self’ so it’s interfering
whenever it can.
Let’s assume that you want to
become more effective at your
job, thus more successful. In
order to do so you have to
adopt the skills that your role
model
utilizes
to
be
successful. This might include
working late. But working late
is a no-no for you. So, now
you’re
screwed
because
instead of encouraging you to
keep the pace and overcome
your ‘I-don’t-want-to-worklate-issues’ your ego will say
something like this: “If THIS
is what it takes, I’ll quit.”
