Now, we will use the same scenario and make a choice using the D.A.R.E decisiveness process.
Define: The problem is that my friends are forcing me to smoke, but my family is strictly against smoking.
Assess: I can either smoke, or not smoke. If I smoke and my family finds out, it would break the trust between my family and I. If I don’t smoke, my family would be happy but my friends might change their opinion of me. If I do smoke, but I am underage, I might be doing something illegal. Smoking is also addictive, which could cause me to keep smoking even if I did not want to, which would cause a huge health risk.
Respond: Considering all the factors, in this situation I feel it is best to not smoke as there is very little benefit compared to the many negative effects which would not only affect me but my family as well.
Evaluate: I think that my decision was right as the consequences I would get for smoking would be far worse than if I did. Even if my friends do change their opinion of me for not smoking, it would not affect our entire friendship as a whole as much as it would affect my relationship with my family if they are strict about smoking.
