PACE Center: Event Management and More
UTSD’s PACE Center now offers event-planning services to
make organizing conferences, meetings, receptions and other
events easy. (Think wedding planners, but for dental events).
The School of Dentistry and the adjacent Cooley Conference
Center are outstanding-yet-affordable venues for events, and
with PACE team guidance, organizing big programs has never
been easier.
Dean John Valenza, DDS, created the PACE Center in 2016 to
streamline services for dental professionals, whether UTSD
alumni or colleagues in the community. The result is a one-stop
shop for things important to dental professionals. (PACE is an
acronym for “Professional Resources, Alumni Affairs, Continu-
ing Education and Events”). The PACE Center has a can-do
attitude and an interest in building relationships that matter.

PACE Center: Professional Resources
Dental and dental hygiene students and UTSD alumni are in-
vited to consult with the team of experts in the Professional
Resources offices of the PACE Center at UTSD, led by
dentist/attorney Boyd Shepherd, DDS, JD, and long-time gen-
eral practitioner S. Jerry Long, DDS. Dr. Shepherd provides em-
ployment contract analysis, career counseling, and consults on
ethical issues and dilemmas. Dr. Long, who is now retired,
draws on experience gained in 46 years of successful practice in
Houston as he offers advice on ethics, practice management and
career issues.
Drs. Joe Piazza, Kenneth Horwitz and Kevin and Afshan
Kaviani also volunteer their services, expanding the range of
expertise available to students and alumni.
