T he Shelborne in Miami is readying for a proper opening . The Art Deco , Collins Avenue classic reopens in May as the newly branded and newly minted The Shelborne by Proper after an extensive $ 100-million renovation of a property that first opened in 1940 , but had gotten a bit long in the tooth over time .
Until now . Los Angeles-based Proper Hospitality has its name on the outside of the building and will manage the revamped 251-room property , which includes suites and villas , many with ocean views .
The reopening comes not a moment too soon for Miami , which has seen some attrition of hotels , while others are potentially converting to other real estate classes .

was founded by ex-Viceroy Hotels & Resorts executives Brad Korzen and Brian De Lowe , has current properties in Santa Monica , downtown Los Angeles , San Francisco and Austin with properties upcoming in Dallas , Lake Tahoe and Palm Springs . The Shelborne by Proper Miami Beach is its first hotel in Florida .
Westdale Properties , King Street and Cedar Capital purchased the hotel in 2020 for $ 120 million and almost matched that number in renovation dollars to recapture its heyday but also make modern updates to the property , which was built in 1940 by Igor Polevitzky and Tripp Russell . II . It reopened to the public in 1945 and subsequently received a makeover and addition by legendary architect Morris Lapidus , who originally designed what is now The Ritz- Carlton , South Beach .
