Sharing EV Charging Insights

Leading EV charging infrastructure company , Blink Charging , has enlisted the expertise of a few of their hospitality clients and staff to share their experience and knowledge to help make EV charging for hospitality a little less daunting to understand .

D emand for electric vehicles is rapidly rising , with estimates surpassing 10.5 million EV sales in 2022 , up by 4 million compared to 2021 . Public charging stations will be a critical component to power the future of electrified transportation , and the role of the hospitality industry is evident . As more EVs hit the streets , more overnight guests will demand this amenity , so they recharge their EV during their stay . But being knowledgeable about EV charging , its different types of connectors and chargers , its various charging speeds , and truly understanding how much it costs for both you , as a hotelier , and for your guests , can seem overwhelming .

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF CONNECTORS , CHARGERS , AND CHARGING SPEEDS ?

There are two different types of chargers , Level 2 or AC chargers and DC fast chargers . Level 2 chargers are installed on a 240- volt circuit , so they most closely resemble any major appliance ; DC fast chargers require a 480-volt circuit . The Blink IQ 200 equipment has a maximum output of 19.2kW when installed on a 100-amp dedicated circuit .
Charging times are hard to estimate as they depend on three factors :
1 . The size of the battery 2 . The output of the charging station
3 . The maximum charge rate of the vehicle ’ s onboard charger
Level 2 charging is ideal for overnight charging as an EV will take between 3-8 hours for a full charge , whereas a DC fast charger can charge an EV up to 80 % in about 20 minutes .
As for connectors , all-electric vehicles in North America now use the standard J1772 plug for Level 2 charging , except for Tesla , which has a proprietary plug . No worries ; however , Tesla drivers have an adapter in the trunk that allows them to charge with other Level 2 charging stations . DC fast chargers have two standard connectors , the proprietary Tesla plug and the CCS plug for all others . There is a Tesla adapter ; however , it ’ s not frequently used , making Tesla drivers find the nearest Tesla Supercharger for a fast charge . Older models of EVs may have a CHAdeMO connector , but these have been phased out to make charging more convenient for drivers . – Andy Kinard , Field Engineer , Blink Charging
