T he medical spa business is booming , with Allied Market Research projecting this segment to grow by 12 % annually and top US $ 27 billion by 2025 . Hotel spas naturally are vying for a piece of the action in this broadly defined space . Typically that means partnering with medical specialists .
For the Bürgenstock Hotel & Alpine Spa at Lake Lucerne , Switzerland , medical wellness provided another revenue stream for the property , a complex of four hotels , two spas and 67 residences . The Waldhotel is a separate structure with its own spa and guestrooms ; a team of physicians and other medical experts oversees medical checkups and services , weight management , detox , skin and healthy aging treatments as well as rehab services .
“ While developing it , we sought to create as many relevant synergies as possible ,” says Bruno Schopfer , managing director of the Bürgenstock Selection . Rehab patients at the Waldhotel have access to the resort ’ s 10 restaurants and leisure facilities . Day visitors and residential guests can book dermatology , dental , cardiology and other medical services at the Waldhotel . Guests at the three other hotels can schedule prevention programs . And the Waldhotel has meeting spaces for medical conferences and events .
Aman ’ s Amanpuri flagship in Phuket , Thailand , recently rolled out integrative medical services and intensive wellness immersions at a new holistic wellness center . The center will provide preventive medicine , aesthetic services and sports performance treatments by a team of physiotherapists , chiropractors ,
nutritionists , traditional Chinese medicine practitioners and Ayurvedic physicians .
A new spa at the Mandarin Oriental , London , partnered with Jacques Proust , a pioneer in cellular aging and preventive medicine , to develop treatments designed to manage stress , improve body shape and slow the effects of time .
In Miami Beach , Carillon Miami Wellness Resort recently brought a plastic surgeon on board to head up a new cosmetic plastic surgery division . He will expand spa services to include non-invasive injectable wrinkle treatments , cosmetic fillers , chemical peels , fat treatments and consultations for more invasive procedures .— M . R .
As more travelers wake up to the notion that a good night ’ s sleep and the ability to tune out are crucial to good health , the pursuit of relaxation has spawned responses from operators that transcend lavender pillow sachets .
The Equinox Hotel , scheduled to open this month at New York City ’ s Hudson Yards project , is the first hotel for the health club operator ; Managing Partner Harvey Spevak has said he wants Equinox to “ own ” sleep . Equinox trainers certified as behavioral sleep coaches will be available to guests . Guestrooms are being touted as “ the ultimate sleep chamber ,” with total soundproofing , blackout window treatments , all-natural fiber mattresses and a Scandinavian two-duvet system meant to better regulate temperature .
Westin , which arguably launched the sleep discussion two decades ago by introducing Heavenly Beds , has added inroom menus with dishes meant to promote restful sleep and is now exploring lighting .
“ Our team is testing cast shadow lighting that creates a play of light , reminiscent of light through treetops , reflections on water or other natural illuminated patterning ,” says Brian Povinelli , SVP and global brand leader . When implemented , guests can personalize lighting profiles that reflect morning , noon and nighttime conditions to fend off jet lag .
Scandic Hotels Group recently partnered with a Scandinavian health club operator to introduce an in-room video sleep program . Guests at eight hotels will have access to guided meditation , yoga and Tabata ( four-minute high-intensity workout ) sessions on guestroom TVs . Select Scandic
