I
f there was a centre of the universe
for the backpacking world, it would
definitely be Bangkok’s Khao San
Road. Incredibly popular amongst
the world’s backpackers and Bangkok
tourists, this exotic looking intersection
of roads is a hub of enjoyable and
relatively cheap night life. Located just
a little west of the city centre, Khao San
Road has continually grown in both
popularity and diversity for decades
now.
Situated in the Banglamphu area it
is just a kilometre or so away from the
famous Grand Palace and the Wat Phra
Kaew in the Phra Nakhon district. It is a
five minute drive (traffic allowing) from
the Ratchatewi BTS sky train station so
accessing it is not a problem. Do however
be wary, as taxi drivers at times charge
unsuspecting tourists up to two hundred
baht for a trajectory worth no more than
50 to 60 baht.
Khao San Road starts revving up in the
early evening as it prepares for the usual
night of fun and entertainment. Going
on a Friday or Saturday night you’ll catch
the party in full swing. If however you
prefer to have a more casual or relaxed
atmosphere, any other day of the week
will do fine.
