altogether. Marriage is something that makes us human. The fact that we are able to choose someone we want to spend the rest of our lives with speaks to the type of freedom and control we have over our own lives. Marriage lets us invite another person into our lives and leave a permanent mark on us. We should ultimately do whatever will make us the happiest and sometimes it is important to take risks and give love a chance. Shows such as ‘The Bachelor’ epitomize everything that is wrong with love and marriage. Love should be natural and intimate, not forced and on display for the whole world. When you’re in a competition, there are so many other variables involved with an already complex emotion such as love. It is a recipe for disaster. Shows such as ‘The Bachelor’ create situations where people are vulnerable. Being vulnera- ble with one person shows you have some level of trust; being vulnerable in front of the whole country with your emotions being examined on a grand scale is not healthy. Yet, shows like these ultimately demonstrate the freedom we have over our own lives as well. If we want to go in front of the world and compete for love against other people, we are able to. However, situations like these often can amplify the feelings of loss people feel after being rejected. But as the old saying goes, tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all (or think we loved). 8
