Shadows of China

M y name is Connor Shade , and this is how I saved China with my sister , Vandrel .
One day , we were walking home from school . By the way , we live in Alaska . Anyway , I saw some sort of red thing , glistening in the snow . Vandrel picked it up and brushed the snow off it , inspecting it .
“ It ’ s a scale ,” she said .
That was confusing . No reptiles this big had ever lived in Alaska for the last 100000 years . Unless it was a fossil from the Mesozoic Era , there was no known way this could be a scale .
We looked at it for a while , inspecting it to see if it was really a scale , but that was when some reddish-orange thing appeared in front of us . Right after that , we lost consciousness . The last thing I saw before I passed out was a swirling rainbow-colored vortex .
We woke up after who knows how long . We were laying on some grass . That was strange . We lived in the northern part of Alaska , so snow was supposed to be everywhere . Instead of snow , however , I saw grass everywhere around us , and a wall in front of us . It didn ’ t look anything like I ’ ve ever seen though .
“ Where are we ?” Vandrel asked .
“ Why would I know ?” I replied .
Suddenly , two people charged into the opening in the wall
“ Well , we could follow them , I guess ,” I said .
We got up , and we saw a chest lying in the grass . We opened it , and in it were two swords and two strange mechanical things . A note taped to one of them said :
“ Put one of these in one of your ears , and you will be able to understand and speak Chinese .”
So , we were in China , judging by the note and the designs of the wall . We put on the mechanical things , and walked through the opening , and saw a bustling city . There were what looked like market stalls scattered everywhere . Imperial Chinese houses were just as common as the stalls .
“ Wow …” Vandrel gasped .
That was when , suddenly , a person dressed in robes saw us . His eyes widened
“ It ’ s them ! The prophecy was true ! We will be saved ! Please , you two , get to the palace !”
“ Uh , why ?” I asked .
