Atruly great renovation begins with understanding what the family needs the space to become. For this family, the kitchen needed to be a family hub, a gathering place, and a bright space to feel comfortable and at home.
Before the renovation started, the existing kitchen was fairly functional. Certain elements, however, made it dark and dated, with a disjointed design. The goal of the renovation was to increase the overall function of the space for the family’ s specific needs, to update the materials and finishes, and to bring beautiful natural light into the space. The layout and features of the kitchen were planned, reworked, and planned again to make sure every detail was perfect.
The cabinetry style is a big piece of the puzzle. The plywood cabinets are crafted with classic solid Shaker doors, a framed inset construction, and a fresh white lacquer— inside and out. This sets the tone for the rest of the kitchen, keeping things bright, clean, and cohesive.
“ White Ice” granite countertops and the warm wooden floor add gorgeous natural elements to the kitchen’ s new look with their colours and patterns. Pairing them with the subtle texture of the oversized white subway tiles lets their organic beauty shine through.
The addition of a new window without a heavy centre mullion goes a long way towards bringing light into the new space, and the strategically placed pot lights, undercabinet task lighting, and beautiful pendants over the farmhouse sink and dinette brings the entire space to life.
A design is not“ in” the details, it is the details, and this kitchen is loaded with them. Every aspect of the way the family uses this space was planned. Every cabinet, countertop, and appliance has a function. Everything you would need for a specific task is located in its“ zone” and is literally at your fingertips, with ample counter space where needed and storage hacks that make cooking and entertaining a pleasure, not a chore. The pot filler over the gas range, for example, turns filling large pots with water into a much simpler task, and the multiple hidden waster bins makes cleaning up a breeze.
However, good design is not always about function, and this homeowner’ s style shines through with the addition of glass display cabinets and loads of personal touches. Oftentimes, our customers wonder if making changes to the initial design we conceive will hurt our feelings, but it is quite the opposite. The changes that are made early on in the design phase often draws out new creativity from our designers and lets us know more about what our client needs and wants. What matters most to us is that when the drywall dust has settled, this wonderful family has a space that is truly their own, which will last for years to come.
