2 s t h g i L CMH to host Lights of Remembrance open house Nov. 10 to honor life Citizens Memorial Hospice is holding a special Lights of Remembrance open house on Tuesday, Nov. 10 from 5:15 to 6:30 p.m. at the Carrie J. Babb Cancer Center at Citizens Memorial Hospital (CMH) in Bolivar. The evening will welcome the holiday season with entertainment and refreshments and is hosted by the Hospice staff. The purpose of the annual Lights of Remembrance “Cheerity” event is to honor the life of a loved one, support the Hospice philosophy of living life fully, comfortably and dying with dignity and to involve the community in the support of Hospice care. Individuals can make donations in honor of family and friends, or in memory of loved ones. The lights decorating the tree will be dedicated to those people who are being honored or memorialized. Giving to the Lights of Remembrance program will provide donations Project H.O.P.E and ensure that physical, emotional, spiritual and bereavement care is given to all terminally ill patients and their families. CMH Hospice caregivers strive to help patients remain as comfortable as possible at home, or in a homelike setting, with family and friends. The program also provides support to the family after a death of their loved one through a bereavement program. Friend was presented the Lillian Hutcheson Award, which is named in honor of Lillian Hutcheson who founded and led the Auxiliary program even before CMH opened in 1982 until her retirement in 2001, by Donald J. Babb, CMH chief executive officer/executive director. Since February 2008, Friend has been an active CMH hospice volunteer. During this time, he has volunteered more than 2,300 hours and has traveled more than 46,000 miles to provide companionship and service to hospice patients and their families. Friend, a veteran himself, has been known to help fellow veter- ans receive all of the military honors and medals they had earned during their years of service. In 2010, Friend was also presented the Senior Service Award by Lt. Governor Peter Kinder, recognizing him for his many hours of service and dedication to the hospice population. At CMH, volunteers make an enormous difference in the everyday lives of patients.
