Opportunities in Networking and Collaboration , how my Business benefited

By Swabra Mutisya
“ No man is an island ”, is a saying that describes the need for others to succeed . Women in business face more challenges while trying to scale up a business . That ’ s what I had to conquer while operating a sole proprietorship for over 10yrs , till I enrolled on the D . E . A . R MSME program where it opened my eyes to a myriad of opportunities in networking , learning and collaboration with other businesses and resources .

Having operated a Printing and Graphic design with little or no growth , I got stuck trying to figure out how much was needed to expand operations and profitability while at the same time adapting to new technologies . Fastforward , in just a few months , I can take a driver ’ s seat and take the business to the next level confidently .
Among the most significant benefits my small business benefited are :
• World-Class Interactive Training on practically all basics about Small Business , getting a clear picture of what a business idea should be . Operating mostly alone means that I need to play all major business function roles solo . I learnt that I can easily bring on board people who are stronger in the areas I may be weak in . No one is totally smart in every business function .
• Networking with ladies who were enthusiastic as I was , and sharing our challenges and milestones , made me realize I am not alone and that the learning curves are a good experience . I also got opportunities to sell to them , and get referrals . Getting a business network is essential and one has to take advantage of opportunities in those networks and business Contacts .
• Knowledge sharing - Case studies and real examples were always used in class . Seeing and experiencing this practically enabled us to tackle everyday business challenges with a better understanding . For instance , technical support and platforms to get our business on a global market .
• Collaboration - The networks built have enabled my business to take advantage of collaboration and co-sharing of each other ’ s businesses , while at the same time promoting each other .
• Saving Costs - My business can enjoy costing effective means of getting an online presence using apps and No-Code Web Designs . A three-year feat I never achieved , and can do that now in hours ! Amazing !
• Saving Time - Through the program , I gained skills to operate the business and networks from home , with no need for a brick and mortar office . With a reliable internet connection , laptop or PC and some space at home , I can operate a small global business offering competitive products and services .
Lastly , I also learnt that as a service provider , I am part of the product and must “ Price myself ” as a product and that my attitude is the most crucial part of that service offered . Never thought of myself as a product though !
