Pictures from the suitcase. The Fritz Grossmann collection
The small village of Zinkenbach on lake Wolfgangsee, today known as Abersee, was discovered as a summer retreat by the Vienna art scene after the First World War. In 1932, an artist colony was born here out of a group of friends who spent their summers together here.
Ferdinand Kitt and his wife Maria, Ernst August Reichsfreiherr von Mandelsloh, Louise Merkel- Romee, Georg Merkel, Bettina and Georg Ehrlich,
Ernst Huber, Franz von Zülow, Josef Dobrowsky, Ludwig Heinrich Jungnickel, Sergius Pauser, and Leo Delitz, as well as artists Gudrun Baudisch, Lisel Salzer, and Gertrude Schwarz-Hellberg were part of the group’ s inner circle. To this day, they all remain important representatives of Austrian art between the two world wars and of toned-down modernism. In 1938, the artists’ circle fell apart: some had to flee from the National Socialists, while others came to terms with it. So that these artists would not be forgotten, the Zinkenbach Artist Colony Museum was founded in 1996 in St. Gilgen. In 2013, the exhibition is dedicated to art historian Fritz Grossmann, who became friends with many of these artists and, when fleeing the National Socialists, took many folios with him. It is a unique collection, today in the possession of Fritz Grossmann’ s daughter in England and being displayed for the very first time.

ENJOYABLE LAKE CRUISES
One of Austria’ s oldest and biggest private shipping companies is the Traunsee Ferry Service – a business that makes those dreams of gliding across the water and watching the landscapes“ slide by” a reality, and it does so year-round.
Not only for visitors from Austria and abroad, wanting to enjoy an impression of the towns along the Traunsee, a light breeze wafting in their face – the locals, too, love to stand out on the deck from time to time. Especially since this fleet looks back on a 170-year tradition! The ships have been christened“ Poseidon”,“ Karl Eder” and“ Maria Theresia”, while the“ Gisela” is a 142-year-old paddle steamer, and the“ Rudolf Ippisch” a smallish motorboat dating back to 1928. Colorful and varied are the reasons for becoming a lake-farer: Some are taking a daytrip – cyclists, for example, use the ferries to cross the lake with their bikes, continuing their tour from some other town. Children fall in love with the Fairytale Cruises, others come but once a year, descending upon Traunkirchen by ship in order to take part in the Corpus Christi procession; there are also candlelight dinners, Pasta Cruises, music and dance events such as
