Herrenchiemsee: In the“ parterre d’ eau” with its water basins and the big canal, fountains spring up every 15 minutes from May until the beginning of October.
created one of the first big baroque churches in Italian style north of the Alps, later destroyed in 1803. Ever since Bavaria’ s King Ludwig II began construction of his personal“ Versailles” here, this island and its palace have drawn special attention.
After Ludwig’ s death, the palace became Bavaria’ s first major tourist attraction, and today Herrenchiemsee is one of Germany’ s true magnets for visitors. People come here to explore the island’ s nature, take a carriage ride, tour the state rooms or the Augustinian Museum, or attend a cultural event. In the second half of July, the Herrenchiemsee Festival invites guests to enjoy concerts and opera performances, this year dedicated to the“ genuine” and“ fake” Baroque, open imitations and subtle references. The program includes German church cantatas, along with the artistic coloratura of Italian opera, Corelli’ s church sonatas, along with Bach concerts,

the radiant music of the Versailles court, as well as sensitive, sometimes passionately torn cembalo works by Bach’ s son, Carl Philipp Emanuel. But above all, audiences get to hear baroque hommages of later generations: Mozart, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Richard Strauss. If you wish to be out and about on the water, you can ride one of the public ferries or take out a boat on your own. For your personal voyages of discovery, docks along the shore rent out sailing, rowing, electric and paddle boats, as they do canoes and kayaks.
Chiemsee is not the only place where you can indulge your“ seafaring” or other aquatic ambitions: With around 30 lakes and rivers, Chiemsee-Alpenland is an Eldorado for nature lovers and sports fans. Even pirates are welcome here: Little guests are invited to sail on a pirate ship and hunt for the hidden treasure of lake Chiemsee.
