There are days when you can clearly grasp the extent of lake Chiemsee. Then you comprehend why Bavaria’ s biggest lake, also Germany’ s third-largest inland lake, is often associated with a“ sea”: An area of 81 km2 can sometimes convey the feeling of maritime expanses, only ending far beyond the horizon. The Chiemsee ferries run 365 days a year – in sunshine or rain or snow, they set out across the lake to the islands, where experiences of very varying flavors await. Three islands lie in the Chiemsee – the uninhabited Krautinsel, Frauenchiemsee, which has been inhabited by Benedictine nuns for 1200 years, and the biggest of all, Herrenchiemsee.
The Chiemsee islands are amongst the earliest documented settlements in the Alpine Foothills region of Bavaria. One of the first abbesses of Frauenchiemsee was Irmingard, daughter of Ludwig the German, whose beatification simultaneously attests to the central significance of the convent for the culture of ancient Bavaria. From Herrenchiemsee, monks Kyrill and Method set out to bring Christianity to Eastern Europe.
