Gateways to the city, or the closest retreats from the city- Anif, Grödig, Grossgmain, Wals, Siezenheim, Bergheim, Anthering, Hallwang, Eugendorf, Koppl, Hof, Glasenbach and Elsbethen are all neighboring towns on the outskirts of the provincial capital- they are residential communities, though also marked by a farming and commercial infrastructure.

To Salzburg visitors wanting to combine closeness to the city with wide open fields, they offer accommodations that radiate tranquility and closeness to nature; with a wealth of things to see and experience. Less so forest than gentle meadows characterize the Flachgau, whose gentle and expansive slopes are typical for the northern part of Salzburger- Land. Looking for big fields of grain here would be pointless, since this region is simply too rainy.
But that means, the Flachgau is very green and the meadows especially beautiful in May. When the hay is mowed, we have the basics for a Flachgau cheese specialty, known as“ Hay-Milk Cheese”. In summer, numerous lakes fulfill the need to combine enjoyment of the sun and water. The abundance of freshwater here is enormous – while the Trumerseen and Wallersee lakes get truly warm, the Fuschlsee and hidden-away, idyllic lake Hintersee stay cool and refreshing. Things become truly sporty on Wolfgangsee, Salzburg’ s biggest lake, a small part of which also belongs to the neighboring province of Upper Austria. If you prefer to swap activity for a leisurely experience, board one of the Wolfgangsee ferries, enjoy the sunlight sparkling off the waves and glide from St. Gilgen across to St. Wolfgang, a famous pilgrimage destination since the Middle Ages.
