Searching for Waves with the HNHS Surf Team The season started off term one with a surf team road trip to Mahia . The team hit the road on a Thursday after school , destination Mahia . The surfers could barely contain their excitement knowing the swell maps were reading almost perfect conditions . The surf team arrived in Mahia at 5:20 pm and were quick to check their boards had made the journey without damage . The accommodation was awesome and was provided by the Prin ’ s family . Max de Groot said “ It ���������������������������������������������������� The excitement couldn ’ t be contained by the surf team , as swell reports for the next day were reading 1.5 meter swell , 2.2 meter set face and ideal conditions . Psyched out of their minds , the surf team went to bed early knowing that the next day was going to be one to remember . At the crack of dawn the surf team loaded their gear into the vans and piled on in . The decision ������������������������������������������������� breaks just past Kaiuku Marae . The car ride was made ����������������������������������������������������� some banging jungle D & B . “ Yeah , it was nuking out there . I can ’ t wait to get back out there ,” said Harry Prins . The team had a great surf ; they all had epic stories to tell about their best waves . It sure was nuking , Harry , because some of the team surfed for four hours and could barely catch a wave in . The swell continued to pump for the rest of the trip and the team headed home on Sunday arvo very tired , but eager to get back there and surf the perfect ������ ������� ������� ��� ��� �������� ����� ��� ������� Gary Broad , Nigel Prins and Eiene Kelly for dealing with the surf teams ’ antics and providing transport .
And a special thanks to the Prins ’ grandparents for providing the team with accommodation for the trip . It would not have been possible without all the help .
Club Round 1 : Psyched and half awake , at 6 AM , the surf team gathered at Waimarama for the Hawke ’ s Bay Board Riders club round one . As the sun revealed the waves , the surfers were delighted to see “ Nuking Waves !”, rolling over the horizon . The surf rolled through all day and every surfer got a wave . The day was a very family friendly community day for the Hawke ’ s Bay surfers . Overall , it was a great experience and thanks to the Hawke ’ s Bay Board Riders club for putting on the event . Overall it was a good year for the surf team with plenty of podiums for the team .
Scholastic National Surf Competition : On the 5th of October , the HNHS surfers who made the representative team began their journey south to the infamous surf town of Kaikoura . The trip down was a big haul taking two days to get to the destination . The surf team performed well in the competition with ������������������������������������������������������ ������������������������������������������������������ with some laydays with no swell . However , the surfers made it work and still had a blast . After the epic trip the team headed back to Hawke ’ s Bay taking 13 hours and arriving at 12pm . Overall , it was an awesome year for the Havelock North High School surf team . Hopefully we can do even better next year .
