Orienteering this year has been stalled by COVID-19 along with most other sports , but three events were squeezed in . On the most dreary day of the year the Hawke ’ s Bay schools sprint and relay were held . The day started early with the sprint at EIT and our 29 competitors were barely able to read their maps through the bucketing rain . Managing to push through the conditions were Max Beale and Thomas Potts coming second and third in the junior boys grade . Piper Burrows was second in junior girls , along with Niamh Vaughan coming second in intermediate girls . Lorcan Rabbitte managed a win in intermediate boys over Karsen Vesty in second place . Our biggest victory of the morning was collecting a clean sweep in Lily Stephens second and Rani Williams third in senior Potts second and Cormac Turley third .

There was time for a quick shower and off to the
Hastings Showgrounds for the relay . The mass starters slid off through the mud and raced their courses in time to come back mate . Winning the junior boys relay was Austen Jones , Thomas Potts and Max Beale but in a close second was the team of Harry Prins , Josh Folkers and Cameron White . Zak McGrath , Luca Broome
77 and Ted Hunter also bolted through their courses girls team of Amy Culham , Lily Stephens and Rani Williams left their competition in the mud and won by an hour . Senior boys was claimed by Havelock North High School with Will Tidswell , Bruno McDonald and and Lorcan Rabbitte in second and , in third , Cameron Broad , Jonty McGrath and Cameron Potts . Overall , a very good day of orienteering from Havelock North High School .
One more schools orienteering event managed to escape COVID-19 and it was the North Islands held in northern Waikato . Sadly , the school team did not sprint and second in the long course .
