The 2020 Environmental Committee has been widely involved in raising awareness and improving the sustainability of our school . We have continued on with the paper recycling and have introduced aluminum and plastic recycling at points across the school . Additionally , we have started investigating the possibility of food scrap composting from beyond just our food technology rooms to a school wide initiative . Initial results suggest that the staff and student body would get behind such a scheme , so the next step is New bins have gone onto the turf to help with a ‘ hot spot ’ of litter .
Early in term one the committee participated in a regional wide beach clean-up at Waitangi Reserve and then held our own junior and senior student beach clean-up at Tangoio Beach in term four . We continued on with last year ’ s committee project of painting a mural with the slogan ‘ Frame your Future ’ on a wall outside the 200 block with the help of Mr Blair , of Crimson Flower Original Designs . The design is a composition of student submissions from the competition run in 2019 .
In term three , we held a Book and Clothes Fair and raised over $ 1000 for the local Forest and Bird Society .
We also were able to supply the health department with teaching resources for sustainable menstrual products and free menstrual cups to distribute , as well as advertising sustainable period products around the school .
In conjunction with the Community Services Committee we held an ocean conservation themed mufti day to raise money to support Sea Shepherd ’ s conservation efforts for the Maui dolphin . On this mufti day we held activities including a magnetic kahoot . It has been a busy year for the team and we are proud of our efforts to continue the tradition of school and community wide action . A big thank you to Ms Jones for her contribution .
