On Saturday the 13th of June , three groups from Havelock North High School competed in the regional Sheilah Winn competition . Throughout the afternoon students performed their pieces at Theatre Hawkes Bay . We were all unbelievably lucky to be a part of the only region able to perform to a live audience , which really did make the experience . “ It was an amazing learning experience ” - Jaime Luisi .
These opportunities to experience drama at such a young age are really special and that is why I am so glad we were able to put together ‘ Go Hamlet !’. This students had ever done and introducing them into the wonderful world of the performing arts was a real gift .
Lola Kidd from the Hamlet group was selected to be a part of the Shakespeare workshop in Dunedin . The Hamlet group was also awarded ‘ Best audience interaction ’. They performed a condensed , melodramatic version of Hamlet , ‘ Go Hamlet !’. This was directed by four of the Year 13 drama students at our school ; Jaime Luisi , Luis Sharp , Oliver Price-Walker and Marguerite Sandleback . These same four students also performed a scene from Love ’ s Labour ’ s Lost , directed by Oliver Price- Walker . This adaptation of the Love ’ s Labour ’ s Lost scene was a fun take on the Shakespearean comedy which category and was sent forward to the national competition . It also was awarded ‘ Best Use of Music ’ for the live music included in the scene .
“ I really enjoyed every moment of performing but for me personally most of the joy of Sheilah Winn came from directing the junior group , ‘ Go Hamlet !’. The level of talent which they displayed in learning their parts in such a small time frame was absolutely stellar . I ’ m so glad to see the standard of the arts at Havelock North High School will continue to be held incredibly high .” Luis Sharp .
Two Year 12 students ; Max Buller and Pia McPhail , Shrew . All of these students worked incredibly hard on their performances and put in a great deal of time and effort . All of this really paid off on Saturday when each and every student gave an amazing performance .
“ Sheilah Winn was a really exciting opportunity . Being able to take a Shakespeare piece and manipulate it to a time frame of your choosing while still remaining true to the text , was challenging but fun .”
Pia McPhail
