The senior boys team became the fastest team to ever complete the East Coast North Island relay cross country champs held over the 2.2km course at Anderson Park . Leading out , Karsen Vesty , beat the old time by six seconds , running 6:27 . Toby Evans and Tayne Patel ran the middle legs Lorcan Rabbitte running the last leg in 6:47 , enabling the team to break the record held by Lindisfarne by a whopping 21 seconds , taking 28 minutes flat for the 8.8km distance . The school ’ s second team finished 5th . Sofia Lumbreras once again ran the fastest time on the senior girls ’ course , just missing out on her own record . Eventually her team which included Sian Llewellyn , Caitlyn Turner and Molly Simon finished third . The junior girls ’ team finished of Amy Nicoll , Mackenzie Speers , Emma Rimmer and Wyntah Green Thom , ended up second , while the junior boys ’ team of James Wallace , Micah Tarry , Joseph Duff and George Knott finished third . Both Year 9 boys ’ and girls ’ teams finished second . The girls were Lilly Hammond , Cerys Llewellyn , Millie Waite and Stella Buczynski , while the boys team were George Lewis , Eddie Gunn , James Maxwell and Max Franks .
The school senior boys cross country juggernaut continued on after they had dominated the podium at the East Coast Secondary School championships held in Gisborne . They finished 1st , 2nd and 3rd and had seven runners in the top 12 places . Karsen Vesty cruised to victory over the 6km in good conditions , retaining his title that he won in 2021 . Lorcan Rabbitte was equally impressive , running strongly for second after a week in isolation after covid . Tayne Patel was not far away in 3rd place . Alex West at 8th and Owen Reid at 10th were
64 the other top ten runners from the school . The senior boys won both the three and six man competition . Sofia Lumbreras retained her title from 2021 by dominating the senior girls ’ race , eventually winning by 1.5 minutes . Amy Nicoll ran a great race in the 3km junior girls , finishing a close 4th . Much improved Mackenzie Speers finished 5th while Lili Ganivet ended up 10th , enabling the team to finish second in the 3-person competition . James Wallace ended up in 9th place in the junior boys ’ race . Both Year 9 three-man teams finished 3rd , with George Lewis ( 9th ) and Eddie Gunn ( 10th ) the best finishers in the boys , while Lilly Hammond ( 9th ) was pick of the girls .
Next up were the NZSS champs in Nelson , where the senior boys team ploughed through the sodden conditions to win the bronze medal on their 6km course , just four points behind powerhouse school , Westlake Boys . Karsen Vesty came in 7th with Lorcan Rabbitte at 20th , and Tayne Patel at 21st in the 170 strong field . The six man team finished 6th overall despite withdrawals with sickness , with Alex West , Owen Reid and Luis Douglas filling the gaps admirably . Luis Douglas actually had two strings to his bow , as he won the gold medal in the para category . Sofia Lumbreras came off a week of Covid to run an outstanding race to finish 10th in the senior girls 4km race . The junior girls team had three in the top 50 to finish 6th in the three-man competition , with Amy Nicoll coming home in 17th , Mackenzie Speers 34th and Lili Ganivet 47th , and were only 1 point behind New Plymouth Girls . The 5 x 2km inter-regional relay was held on the Sunday morning with four from HNHS senior boys making up the East Coast team .
