The ECNISS champs were Covid-restricted this year , with bubbles formed to try and keep numbers at a manageable size and some events not included . Karsen Vesty won the senior boys 1500m , breaking the 35 year ECNISS record by three seconds . Lorcan Rabbitte , despite not being able to run in his favourite 2000m steeplechase , was able to win the 110m hurdles and the 300m hurdles as well as running second in the 3000m , 3rd in the 400m and finishing 3rd in the javelin . Albert van Niekerk won javelin and finished second in the shot put , just missing the school record by 9cm . Those three teamed up with Ben Finnie to finish second in the senior 4x100 relay . Sofia Lumbreras did the senior 800m / 400m double and teamed up with Vaya Chaplow , Amponsaa Tabi-Amponsah and Lili Ganivet to win the senior girls relay . Amponsaa continued to cover herself in glory , winning titles in the intermediate 100m , 200m and long jump as well as the relay win . Vaya Chaplow continued on from her NZ champs silver in the javelin to win the intermediate grade . Hunter Avery dominated the girls sprints with wins in the 100m and 200m , and joined Millie Woodham , Neve Avery and Cerys Llewellyn in winning the junior 4x100m relay . Amy Nicoll had a busy day , coming first in the junior 1500m , 2nd in the 3000m and 2nd in the high jump . Other notable performances were Lili Ganivet with seconds in both 300m and 800m , Millie Woodham 2nd in 100m , 3rd in 200m , Cerys Llewellyn 3rd in 300m , Neve Avery 2nd in long jump , Ben Finnie 3rd in javelin , and Elvies Kim 3rd in 1500m . In the intermediate grade , Oscar Holm finished third in both the 3000m and 1500m .
Six athletes from the school were named in the Hawke ’ s Bay Gisborne team for the NZ athletic championships held in Hastings . In an extraordinary effort , they brought home seven medals , including two gold . Karsen Vesty ran a superb race , outkicking hot favourite , Zane Powell , in the M20 1500m , smashing the school record in a time
52 of 3:54.81 . In a titanic sprint to the finish , Karsen got the upper hand with about 30 metres to go . The opposite happened in the 800m race where Powell managed to relegate Karsen to the silver medal . The other gold medal was won by Lorcan Rabbitte in the M18 2000m steeplechase . Lorcan took command of the race with around 450m to go , breaking the old school record , by over 37 seconds . The other top medal performance was achieved by Vaya Chaplow , who produced a five metre PB throw , to finish second in the W18 javelin . The distance was 36.23 metres , just outside the school record . Karsen Vesty also picked up a silver medal in the M20 4x400m relay , while Lorcan Rabbitte and Tayne Patel picked up a bronze in the M18 4x400m relay . Another outstanding performance was from Sofia Lumbreras , in finishing 10th in the W18 1500m , breaking a 35 year old school senior girls record with a time of 4:52.59 . The other athlete to compete was Amponsaa Tabi-Amponsah , who made the final of the W18 100m , being the youngest in the field , where she finished 7th . Karsen Vesty competed in the World Junior athletic champs held in Colombia in August , running a qualifying time at the Hastings Sports Park over 1500m . It was a solo effort , running 3:48.26 in far from ideal conditions .
