The 2022 Environmental Committee has had an exciting year taking part and gaining $ 500 for our efforts by placing in the Hawke ’ s Bay Regional secondary schools ’ competition .
As with every year , we continued our weekly recycling efforts but we also put aside time to develop our project for the competition - we needed a good idea and wanted something that would involve the whole school in some way and , most importantly , was sustainable action . While the weather was good , a group of junior and senior students went up Te Mata Peak and continued to plant and weed at our adopted patch , which was both sweaty and satisfying work .
The focus of Term 2 was to plan and prepare for the regional challenge . We used the money made from our secondhand clothing stall at Havestock to fund most of the materials and also put in an application to the Regional Council , which was granted . Once all our materials were sourced and everyone knew about the upcoming form class challenge , we had a planting day on the last day of the Term 2 holidays to make sure the plants were all ready for Whanake for Future to start .
leaders presented our Whanake for Future challenge to the Hawke ’ s Bay Regional Council and competition judges , and we were pleased to be granted third place and our prize money . We are just tidying up the apple bins we have sourced to be our gardens and ensuring we have the human labour needed to care for the plants over summer .
It has been a busy year for us and we are so proud of our efforts and contribution to the school and wider community . A huge thank you to Ms Jones for her contribution .
