In preparation for the benchmark examinations in this term , students learned how to manage exams and study stress with mindful breathing techniques and effective revision strategies .
Students also participated in the Roadsafe Hawke ’ s Bay initiative , designed to reduce the number of deaths and accidents on Hawke ’ s Bay roads . Students participated in the Road Safety Expo online this year , and learned about how RIDS - Restraints , Impairment , Distractions and Speed - can all play a part in car accidents , especially for inexperienced , new drivers . Thank you to both staff and students who have been involved in the 11 Encompass programme this year .
Year 12
Waiho i te toipoto , kaua i te toiroa Fill the basket of knowledge .
Year 12 Encompass this year offered students some time outside of their academic studies to recognise and develop some valuable transferrable skills .
The overall theme for Year 12 is ‘ making SMART choices ’. We are not born with SMARTS . We develop SMARTS . Being SMART is not about being intelligent . SMART people have a range of strategies to help them tackle challenges and move ahead in study , work and life .
Year 12 Encompass classes moved between subject experts who each delivered a four week workshop that targeted the soft and hard skills that universities and businesses recognise as important , in our rapidly changing society .
Students were encouraged to consider their interpersonal communication skills and discussed the importance of listening and how to communicate more effectively . They investigated options for their future other than the standard pathway from school to university and engaged with ideas about civics and citizenship . They explored what living independently would entail and worked collaboratively to come up with some practical ideas for making a flat run smoothly . Students spent time constructing and / or improving their CV and learnt how to write an effective cover letter . They discovered their money personality and how this drives their financial decisions .
The students also had five lessons of the highly successful Mates and Dates Programme . Trained facilitators ran the workshops that encouraged students to consider what healthy relationships are and how to manage them . It was a collaborative course where students were able to engage in conversation to discuss issues , in a safe and supportive environment . opportunities for students to develop skills that will assist them on their journey when they leave school . Our year started with students familiarising themselves with their pepeha - an essential part of their identity as young people from Aotearoa . Students then developed their understanding of team work and leadership before putting their skills to the test working with our new year nine students . This section of the programme concluded with a successful newspaper fashion show that tested both leadership and patience .
The focus for Term 2 was on essential life skills and started with two sessions exploring finance and budgeting . Students spent time considering their financial situation for the following year including the preparation of a fortnightly budget and discussion of good and bad debt . Students then had the opportunity to select from a range of elective sessions including Brain Gym , Life Hacks and Flatting Tips , Effective Communication / Job Interviews , Employment Skills , Tips for Effective Tertiary Study and Managing Stress .
Throughout the year , most students participated in one of the ten school committees and several Encompass sessions were used by the committees to put into action the skills they had learned around organisation and leadership . We were also fortunate to be able to host the Mates and Dates team again this year who facilitated five sessions looking at healthy relationships and the concept of consent . Throughout the programme , students worked collaboratively to develop a campaign that was used to promote healthy relationships and awareness about the importance of consent within the school community .
Our year finished with a combined morning tea and the reuniting of students with the time capsules they had created in 2018 as Year 9 students . A final interhouse olive stone spitting challenge sealed the ‘ Camp Shield ’ for Rata House . Well deserved , they had shown fortitude throughout many of the team building activities throughout the year with the exception of the gumboot throw . The final session was also a chance for students to view the 2022 Leavers Cookbook – a collaborative project put together during the Year 13 Encompass programme .
