Year 9

Ahakoa he iti , he pounamu - Although it is small , it is greenstone
The Year 9 Encompass team welcomed a number of new faces this year : Mr Dean Fox , Ms Katie Mines , Miss Rebecca Prestidge and Mrs Akira Maharaj ( replacing Ms Lucy Meagher for three terms ), Miss Felicity Potae and Mr Lachlan Russell . Their collective enthusiasm and adaptability were much appreciated in this third topsy-turvy year of Covid adjustments . It seems incredible that we opened the first Time Capsules this year , five years on . This provided an entertaining ( and nostalgic ) trip down memory lane for our senior cohort , who were the first to seal their capsules in 2018 as bright-eyed Year 9s .
A wide range of collaborative challenges was thrown at our students this year , from trust walks and Jacob s Ladder , to fashion parades and Kapa Haka training with our Year 13 leaders . The Escape Room in Term 3 saw the previous year s record broken by no less than four classes , so collaboration does seem to be a forte of this year s cohort .
Furthering their expanding work-readiness skills , students role played job interview scenarios , had a go at completing IRD , tax and Kiwisaver applications , and completed career pathways activities . We must give a great shout out to seniors Ty Ormsby and Ryan Sewell , alongside Gayle Hutcheson from Arataki Honey , who took the time to video their top tips on interview preparation for us .
Highlights of the year included hosting the Life Education Trust ( NZ ) SMART $ financial programme , NCEA Jeopardy , The Logo Game , Blookets , visual memorisation techniques and , with a more prominent focus on study skills this year , we were also lucky to have the HNHS Academic Committee members come in to facilitate workshops and offer some sage advice from their own high school experiences . Thank you to everyone involved !

Year 11

Hurihia tō aroaro ki te rā tukuna tō atarangi kia taka ki muri i a koe Turn your face to the sun and the shadows will fall behind you
The Year 11 Encompass programme gives students time to focus on their own wellbeing . Students are encouraged to explore their relationship with themselves and others in an increasingly digital world , and are introduced to a range of tools designed to enhance and improve their wellbeing .
In Term 1 the programme focused on students ’ relationships with themselves and their own thoughts , covering an introduction to mindfulness , breathing techniques and meditation exercises , understanding the stress response , the basics of brain science , how to recognise unhelpful patterns in their thinking , managing their inner critic , and practising gratitude for enhanced wellbeing .

Year 10

Ina kei te mohio koe ko wai koe , I anga mai koe i hea , kei te mohio koe . Kei te anga atu ki hea
If you know who you are and where you are from , then you will know where you are going
In Term 2 our focus moved to developing healthy relationships with others . Students took part in the national ‘ Mates and Dates ’ programme for five weeks , delivered by outside facilitators , focusing on healthy and safe relationships . We also covered emotional intelligence topics , related to communication in our close relationships , using eye contact , mindful listening and empathy . Term 2 included a workshop week , where students could choose a wellbeing session , designed to cater for different relaxation and wellbeing preferences . These included a bike ride to Red Bridge Cafe , a nature walk at Tainui Reserve , Art Therapy , self defence , mindful colouring and board game sessions .
The Year 10 Encompass classes started the year with introductions to NCEA and the MyMahi app , an essential tool for timetables and results as well as career planning and self reflection .
With a new format this year , 10 workshops were completed in two period rotations : budgeting , speaking with confidence , online identity and safety , copyright and
