Over the past few years , Hawke ’ s Bay has been populated by outstanding hockey teams . Most of which go on to be competitive against some of the best in the country . This year ’ s group has been no exception . While we , unfortunately , didn ’ t get to test our merit at the tournament due to Covid-19 , we still played some of the best hockey I have seen from our team in years . With a spread of ages and an abundance of skill , we took to the pitch every Wednesday evening for a hard-fought game . And yet , while we put our utmost on the field we often didn ’ t walk away with a victory . However , that ’ s okay . Because even though we lost quite a lot we kept coming back each week and we kept fighting . Speaking from experience I can tell you that facing teams you know you may not beat , even after putting in your best effort , week after week takes no small amount of courage . Yet every boy on our school team did just that . We may not have taken many wins under our belt but I think we came out of this season as stronger people . From the forwards to our keeper , every boy on our team put it all on the line and I would not have preferred to play my final season for this school with anyone else . To our coach Mr Geoff Morrison , thank you for putting up with us and doing your best to coach us and to coach me for the last five years of my life . As with the players , I don ’ t think I could have had a more dedicated or fun coach . Every practice was a treat , even when you made us run . So to everyone involved in hockey and to everyone who I have met through it , Helen , Sue and my past team players thank you , it has been amazing . To this year ’ s team , well done boys , we made it through , and thanks for an awesome year . To the future of the team , we ’ ve got a pretty decent losing streak going , it would be nice if you could screw that up for us .
