This year , funnily enough , over half of our dancers actually had never danced before ! It began with our winning talent quest item , ‘ All That Jazz ’, which was a musical theatre piece . We adapted it so there was no singing and more dancing , courtesy of our lovely choreographers : Alex Grant , Zoe Congalton and Renee Thompson ( who had incredible patience with the non-dancers and wonderfully creative choreography ). This led us to compete in the open category of the DanceNZmade competition , held at Toi Toi in August , just before lockdown hit .
During the day we participated in a total of three workshops , one lyrical and one ‘ funk ’, and the finale workshop , which was for the dance everyone performed at the end of the night . Our group received scores over 80 from both of the judges for our performance . While we didn ’ t place it was still , overall , a very successful day which was enjoyed by each of us .
