Back Row : Kōkā Ripeka Hāpuku ( Kaiako ) Front Row : Rosemary Yorke , Nicholas Waitoa , Suzanna Haliburton
This year the Taiohi Tū Committee was made up of leaders Rosemary Yorke and Nicholas Waitoa , alongside members Mahinarangi Cooper-Rapaea , Suzanna Haliburton and kaiako Kōkā Ripeka . The purpose of Taiohi Tū is to demonstrate leadership qualities and aim to be involved in and celebrate activities and events that are connected to Tikanga Māori . to come together and celebrate our achievements and participation at school . Although we were challenged with member numbers and Covid-19 I ’ m proud to say many of our goals were achieved and we hope next year ’ s Taiohi Tū Committee will continue to develop Te Reo Tuesday and other initiatives to help grow our committee .
Whāia te iti kahurangi ki te tūohu koe me he maunga teitei .
This year these events included the Year 9 pōwhiri , Te Reo Tuesday , interhouse Kapa Haka , Matariki and Mana Tauira . One of this year ’ s highlights was having the opportunity to form a new initiative , ‘ Te Reo Tuesday ’. This initiative was created to incorporate a better use of Te Reo Māori in our daily conversations at Havelock North High School and to encourage an inclusive and supportive environment for all students . During these sessions students had the opportunity to learn their pepeha , basic greetings and conversation starters as well as karakia and waiata . This year we also had a successful Matariki evening with students from Havelock North Primary , Te Mata , Lucknow , Haumoana and Havelock North Intermediate . The night included waiata , haka and poi and each school presented a unique and well prepared performance that whānau were able to enjoy . Another huge success was interhouse kapa haka as it brought our kura together to celebrate and appreciate Māori culture and language . We are looking forward to Mana Tauira , the Māori / pasifika student leavers event . This is a great way
