the true Miro House spirit and support demonstrated by students and teachers really shone , and after the intense relay races which would end the day , Miro House was stoked to secure the win , giving us a big boost straight back into the race for the Patu .
After an unfortunate 4th placing in house netball which saw Rata ’ s lead grow , our hopes remained high as netball reinforced the strong sense of house spirit Miro has always been proud of . It was great to see our senior netball girls help to coach the boys ’ team and help out with the junior girls ’ team as well as the great teamwork and support demonstrated both on and off the court .
The third major house event , and definitely the highlight of the year , was Kapa Haka . We nailed it . With the incredible help of Mr Lowry and only a few practices to get our performance polished , we produced a spectacular performance . Both our Waiata and Haka were very well performed and our transitions and chosen song Tanenuiarangi were top quality , gaining us a win which the whole house can be extremely proud of . A special mention must go to Jasmine Repko , Tayla Henry and Karahuia Hapuku-Karaitiana for their amazing work in leading the way .
House football was a very brief event , unfortunately cut short by bad weather . We were able to play the senior boys ’ games where we did quite well , winning two games and drawing one . Our girls and junior boys played two games each , playing very well also to win us a first equal in football . Being 17.5 points behind Rata , we needed to get a good placing in the multi event . That is exactly what happened on Wednesday when we had the lego and tech challenge , where we came first in the tech and third in the lego , setting us up nicely for the next day . On Thursday we had the construction challenge and the quiz where our four teams did extremely well , placing us in first overall coming into the last day . The last three events were chess , portrait and food and having a three point lead we were quite confident if we placed well today , it would be a close race to the finish . Placing 2nd in food , 2nd equal in chess and 2nd in the portrait meant we came first overall , only 7.5 points behind Rata , with one event to go . Coming into the final event , cross country , the stakes were high and we knew the importance of participation if we wanted a final shot at securing the win . We knew we had to come two places above Rata , and the leaders and Mr Lowry stressed the importance of everyone turning up to have a go at the 3km course , no matter what the pace . Our numbers looked very good at the start of cross country with a lot of orange all over the field . We did take the win in this event ( by a lot !) but Rata snuck into second place meaning we finished up a mere 2.5 points behind them in the race for the Patu .
Overall we had a very successful year and the whole of Miro House can be very proud of their efforts . Despite not having the best start to the year , we did very well to stay in contention with the Patu all the way through the year . All of our Year 13s stepped up to show great leadership and should be very proud of themselves . One massive thank you must go to Mr Lowry , as this year wouldn ’ t have been possible without his passion and dedication . Another huge thank you must go to Mrs Nowell- Usticke and our amazing Miro House form teachers who looked after us throughout the year and encouraged us all the way through . You were vital to the success this year .
