Into Oblivion
Poetry - 173 Q3
I’ll start off by saying this is one, if not my favorite, piece I’ve ever written. The idea for this piece came from Tania and Denise’s Senior Project. Basically, what they were trying to accomplish with their project called Through the Eyes of an Addict, was to create awareness and inform teenagers about substance abuse. Denise drew around six pictures each representing the positive and negative side of a substance. Her drawings were amazing and incredibly accurate and we were asked to create a piece that reflected each drawing. Even though their work and preparation was incredible, I wasn’t very inspired by the project, so I postponed it for as long as possible. On the very last day I whipped out one of my favorite pieces. I started off by describing music and how it might look and then it somehow morphed into someone consuming alcohol and the pleasant effects that it has.
I started this piece as a brain dump simply writing fast and with no editing. I wrote whatever came to mind even if it wasn’t coherent, with the plan that I would latter polish it. It turned out to be over three pages, and the limit was two. So though a lot of editing I managed to create a somewhat organized piece that through my eyes represents the picture. Unfortunately, I didn’t have anyone actually edit my piece though peer editing. I got two friends to give me feedback but it was not nearly as focused and targeted as we do in class.
At the beginning of the piece my goals were clear and simple. Write at least one page, single spaced, of the image presented above, no more, no less. But as I continued writing I found myself to be very inspired with my work and I created something I really liked. My favorite part is “A tingle is now / crawling up my legs, / Ticking my soul / And making it laugh.” I can actually picture this happening, the tingle crawling and slipping through every crack creating happiness.
