Investing in the expansion of sickle cell services
Access to automated red cell exchange services for people living with sickle cell disease was expanded following a national programme led by Health Innovation Yorkshire & Humber.
We helped to secure £ 9 million investment from NHS England to address health inequalities experienced by West African and Afro-Caribbean communities disproportionately affected by this condition. By bringing together key stakeholders across the system and using evidence-based data to target areas of greatest need, we secured funding for 25 additional devices across 22 NHS trusts in England, bringing services closer to people’ s homes.

Around 15,000 people in England are living with sickle cell disease, with about 10 per cent eligible for this treatment on the NHS. Investment in the rollout of this technology could enable up to 10,000 additional apheresis procedures each year.“ Sickle cell disease has affected me in every way: mentally, physically, socially, financially. I’ ll never stop thanking the NHS, my haematology team, blood donors, and everyone who makes safe blood available for me.”
