Restaurant Review
THE BLACK HORSE INN ’ S VEGAN EVENING by Rebecca Jean-Baptiste
IMAGINE MY EXCITEMENT AT BEING ASKED BY HIYA BUCKS MAGAZINE TO REVIEW A 100 % VEGAN MENU AT AN IDYLLIC COUNTRY PUB RIGHT ON MY DOORSTEP !
Once a month , The Black Horse Inn turns itself over to the V side ! And wow do they do it well ! Set in some of Buckinghamshire ’ s most beautiful countryside , The Black Horse keeps with village pub tradition and welcomes you with a rustic , yet refined , atmosphere . The staff were immediately warm and friendly , seating us with a tall , chilled bottle of water and the infamous plant based menu …. I was so eager to get my hands on it and pour over the options like a kid in a sweet shop , better yet , a vegan in a vegan restaurant ! And I wasn ’ t the least bit disappointed . Whilst contemplating our menu choices , we sipped on a clean and crisp glass of white from the surprisingly extensive list of vegan beverages on offer . To start we ordered the Roasted Vegetable Kebabs and the Sundried Tomato , Cheese , Spinach and Pesto Tart …. Oh my goodness ! Whilst the kebabs were both deliciously juicy and lightly charred , the tart was by far our favourite dish . The balance of flavours , contrast of textures and simplicity of the presentation made for an exceptionally moreish combination . I asked Head Chef Sarah for a takeaway , only to find they ’ d sold out !! No surprise there to be fair ! For mains , we opted for the Spiced Chickpea & Sweetcorn Burger and the Mediterranean Wild Mushroom Pie . Once again , the dishes were cleanly presented and boasted bags of flavour . The spicing of the Burger was delicate yet distinctive , hints of cumin and paprika made for a subtly sweet and smoky taste . Our favourite though had to be the Pie ( maybe we just love pastry ?!). When it came to desert we really couldn ’ t decide …. so , we didn ’ t , we had them all ! Our mutual winner was the Parfait . A rich and smooth slice of heaven ! Pudding was briefly interrupted by a large group of fellow vegan friends who came to say goodbye ( and casually sample our array of deserts )! It was so lovely to see both the vegan and non-vegan community equally enjoying this amazing food . My only criticism of the evening is that it came to an end . We will be back next month without a doubt . It ’ s a HUGE thumbs up to The Black Horse ’ s Vegan Night from Began ’ s .
THE NEXT VEGAN NIGHT AT THE BLACK HORSE WILL BE ON WEDNESDAY 14TH JUNE .
