Reminiscing

The Past

One of the things that I will never forget in my elementary days is me being one of the representatives of our school in the much awaited first Scrabble Tournament initiated by the City Government of Marikina.

Aside from Journalism, it was the second reason why I was able to compete outside the school premise. And it was so memorable and very fulfilling because back then I was considered as a shy type and afraid to come out of my shell. It was one of my fears to be seen by the crowd, to unravel myself and flaunt my inner talents I did not know yet; due to my what so called “forces” surrounded me that hindered me to explore and show-off myself. Anyways, going back, I was so glad then that I was chosen as one of the members the competing group because I just tested myself if I could do the tryout but unexpectedly and surprisingly, it turned out well because our ... teacher chose me as one of the participants.

... teacher chose me as one of the participants. It was my first time to play Scrabble and I just found myself enjoying it and later on considered it as one of my hobbies.

The tournament was held in the Municipal Hall of City of Marikina and lots of Elementary and High Schools joined the event. It was overwhelming yet very mind-wrecking because just knowing your competitors, I don’t know, it was just so nerve wracking. The game started good because generally, we beat our first group of competitors thus as the tournament continued, the intense amplified. At the announcing of the winners, all of us contestants were so experiencing butterflies in the stomach. But, the worries and insecurities evaporated as the emcees proclaimed that our school, MalandayElementary School, got the Second Place! Whooo! All of us, our mentor and my group mates, burst out and got relief!

We were so happy to bring the bacon in our school and we were really honored to bring the name of our school in that event. Indeed, one of my never unforgettable past back in grade school.

Scrabble, according to Oxford Dictionary, is to “scratch or grope around with one’s fingers to find, collect, or hold onto something”. However, it is given another meaning when Alfred Butts, through his intelligence, invented a game, a combination of anagram or rearranging letters and word puzzles, which would test the probability and skills of a person. He called it Scrabble. It has been played since 1950’s and continuously popularized until now.
