Election Tuesday on Amendments, Bond Issue, JP
City and county voters go to the polls Tuesday to cast ballots on several issues. Polls will be
open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Poll tax receipts are not necessary, but election officials recommended that
voters have the receipts in their possession in case a controversy arises.
The only issue before city voters will be the two proposed constitutional amendments. County
voters will decide on the board of education’s $1,400,000 school bond issue as well as the two
amendments. Voters in beat three – besides voting on the bond issue and constitutional amendments –
will vote on justice of the peace to replace the later Nat Hurdle. Four persons are in the justice of the
peace race: L.E. Boone, T. Harold Crenshaw, Mrs. Nellie Harris and Alton P. Joyner. Unless one
candidate is elected by a majority, a run-off will be held October 17.
The two constitutional amendments, if passed by a statewide majority, would give counties the
same authority as cities in regard to tax exemption for new industries, and the selling or leasing of 16th
section land for industrial purposes. The first amendment would extend from five to ten years the period
which ad valorem exemptions may be offered to new industry by all counties of the state. The exceptions
