The construction would be financed through state and county funds, with no federal aid involved. The schools would be comparable in size and scope to the new Northeast School. Additions and renovations to the Clarkdale School on Highway 45 South would be accomplished at a cost of $297,000. This would include a new elementary building, cafeteria and new high school rooms added to the present building. Renovations are planned for the entire high school building. The Northwest School in the Center Hill-Martin area would cost $544,500. The Southeast school would cost $495,000 and is planned for location on the Vimville-Long Creek road. Included in the bond issue is $49,500 for an athletic field and equipment for the Northeast School. Teachers’ homes for the county-at-large would cost $14,000. Meridian Star, October 1, 1961 County to Vote on School Construction - Consolidation Would Result from Issue Lauderdale County residents will cast ballots Tuesday on a proposed school construction plan that would consolidate county school into four attendance centers. The $1,400,000 bond issue to be voted on would finance a new Northwest and Southeast Attendance Center, and additions and renovations to the Clarkdale School. The new Northeast School is now in operation south of the Naval Auxiliary Air Station. The four school plan is being carried under a motion unanimously approved by the county board of education on June 12. According to the board’s official minutes, the motion was made by board member H.A. Pickett and seconded by Lamar Taylor. The motion called for: An attendance center at Vimville to known as the Southeast Lauderdale County High School., An order to maintain the Clarkdale School on the present site with renovation of the present buildings and construction of needed new buildings., An order to build a new school to be known as the Northwest Lauderdale County High School on the Poole-McDonald property., Proceeds of a bond election to be used for completion of a long-range plan with proration of the funds on a per capita basis of students to be served.
