-Bolivar was forced to exile

1821- Venezuela’s independence from Spain

Monroe Doctrine:

Concert of Europe: wanted to restore Spain control in Latin America

British disagree: wanted to trade with Latin America

James Monroe (President): Americans were off limits for any colonization efforts and warned against European intervention

Fear: European countries feared British navy, which stood between Latin America and European invasion
