These were the people who had the horrible jobs that no one else wanted to do. This stretched from cleaning up poop, animal or human, to picking up garbage and sorting it. The untouchables were deemed unfit for society hence their name, and if you were born into the untouchable caste there was little to no chance for you to get out.
The caste system was built for a society that was built a long time ago. It was very beneficial to the people in Ancient India, but not so much now. People in the Untouchables caste have limited job and educational opportunities, and they are constantly discriminated against. Many activists like Mahatma Gandhi, who was a devoted Hindu, called for the end of discrimination against the Untouchables. Gandhi believed that the suffering that these people went through many them blessed and holy.
Many people are still fighting to end the caste system, and many Hindu’s have turned their back on their religion because of the caste. The Hindu religion fits very well with the caste and it is one of India’s most prominent religions. Hinduism and the caste system will forever be intertwined until the death of the caste system. Hinduism has many activists who are working today to end the caste system, and it is a fight that has been and will be fought for a very long time.
After the formation of popular Hinduism, it immediately gained a large following. The leaders of India liked that the people followed the religion, because Hindu ethics encouraged a person to stay inside of their caste, and to work hard and act morally in order to be reincarnated into a higher caste. Hinduism definitely helped to preserve the otherwise shaky caste system that had to evolve rapidly in order to fit into society. The emperors of India also employed an education system that was based on Hindu ethics and values. Hinduism was definitely a contributing factor to the survival of the caste system.
The Caste system is a very complex social structure of people being born into an occupation. There are different classes of people, so if your father was a craftsmen than you were expected to have a job at the same rank as a craftsmen. The same went for the ruling elite class of India. The caste system helped to maintain social order in India, and it was illegal to be born into a craftsmen family, and attempt or become the king. The lowest of all social classes was called the untouchables.
