a child in the dark, searching desperately
for his mother, yet she appears nowhere to
be found. In the time when Job longs for
Him so desperately, He seems to be hidden.
Yet Job knows something that I sometimes
forget. He knows that he is being tested.
He even courageously claims, “When he
has tried me, I shall come out as gold.” Job
has made a choice. A choice which all of us
must face when we hit the slippery wall of
doubt. Do we follow Jesus anyway? When
we can’t see Him, can’t understand Him,
can’t make logical sense of Him anymore?
Or do we trade in our investments and walk
away? The disciples faced this choice many
years ago. Jesus had told his followers that
they needed to eat his flesh and drink his
blood in order to have eternal life. This was
difficult for many of his followers to accept,
and they left. Now the twelve disciples were

faced with this same decision:
After this many of his disciples turned
back and no longer walked with him. So
Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you want to go
away as well?” Simon Peter answered him,
“Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the
words of eternal life, and we have believed,
and have come to know, that you are the
Holy One of God.” John 6:66-69
What beautiful truth. To whom else
would I go? Jesus does have the words of
eternal life, and I have believed. I have come
to know that He is the Holy One of God.
This is the truth. Even in the most silent
place, when my feelings have lost their grip
on Him, and when my mind is screaming
doubts about who He is. The shield of faith
sometimes feels light. Yet other times, it feels
incredibly heavy. Nevertheless, following
Jesus, even when the peace has fled, requires
