LOCAL LIFE
ONE OF THE HILLS FINEST...
Scott completed 10 marathons in 10 days, dressed as a pizza for Nedd’ s Uncomfortable Challenge. by Lorna Gordon
When local Hills resident Scott Young signed up for Nedd’ s Uncomfortable Challenge this year, he knew he wanted to push himself. Nedd Brockmann, the well-known name behind the challenge, invites Australians to choose something uncomfortable to do for ten days. It could be anything from cold plunges to giving up entertainment to living on just $ 10 a day and get sponsored to raise money for people experiencing homelessness. What Scott didn’ t expect was just how far his own version of“ uncomfortable” would take him.
Quite literally, it led him 420 kilometres down the road.
When Scott first saw the challenge on social media he thought it was a great cause to get behind and decided that he would sign up and his challenge would be to run every day. This simple idea soon turned into something much bigger than he first considered, rather than run 10 kilometres for 10 days, he was going to run a marathon each day. To make thing more uncomfortable, because discomfort was the whole point, he also decided to do it dressed in a pizza costume.
“ If you’ re going to be uncomfortable, why not go all out?” he laughs.
Not only was he hoping to achieve a remarkable show of endurance, in a pizza suit, he set himself a pretty high goal to raise for the charity, which was $ 10,000. I asked him what made him consider such a huge distance to run, when most people find completing one marathon an achievement in itself.
“ I thought it was a great cause,” he told me.“ I’ d been running a fair bit personally and wanted to do something meaningful. But I wasn’ t sure

what. At first the pizza suit wasn’ t even part of it, but the more I thought about making it truly uncomfortable, the more it made sense.”
Scott isn’ t new to running he’ s completed several marathons including Sydney, Newcastle and the Gold Coast events but ten marathons in ten days was uncharted territory for this experienced runner.
“ I didn’ t really prepare for something that big,” he admits.“ I’ d done the Sydney Marathon two months earlier and an ultramarathon, but this was a late decision. Still, I hoped the training I had would be enough.”
Even running one marathon takes a great deal of training, not only physically, but eating well and getting into the right mindset are all important to ensuing you are at your best to run 42 kilometres. Scott explained that it turned into a battle of will as well as physically completing the distance each day, something which pushed him beyond his previous experiences.
“ Physically, I realised I could push through moments I would have rested in before. Mentally, it was huge. I learned my limits were further away than I thought.”
Scott began day one feeling strong and optimistic, he was excited to get out and start the challenge he had set himself and didn’ t think much beyond the first marathon and expecting to have physical pain, but even that didn’ t fully prepare him for what he would go through.
“ The first day was exciting, my body felt good, I got through it pretty comfortably and thought, this might not be too bad. Day two I woke up in pain. That second marathon was pretty rough. That’ s when I thought, How am I going to do this?”
But somewhere in the middle, his mindset began to shift. This was the point of making such a huge commitment for Scott, to see how
