Year of the Tiger roars in
This month marks the beginning of the Year of the Tiger in the Chinese zodiac calendar . While the annual live community festivals are on hold due to the pandemic , there ’ s still plenty to celebrate in the Lunar Year of the Tiger .
This year ’ s event starts 1 February , which is a traditional holiday in China and East Asian countries .
Hills Shire has more than 27,500 residents with Chinese or southeast Asia ancestry , but many nationalities celebrate the Lunar New Year .
It ’ s one of the most widely observed public holidays in the world , with over one-sixth of the world ’ s population celebrating . So , if you were born after the day of the second New Moon in years 1938 , 1950 , 1962 , 1974 , 1986 , 1998 or 2010 it ’ s your time !
Brave , competitive , unpredictable and self-confident are the attributes of those born in the Year of the Tiger . Tigers are fiercely independent , loving their personal space and possess strong self-esteem
They ’ re said to be courageous , ambitious and active people who love a good challenge and adventure in life .
Lucky numbers are 1 , 3 and 7 , with lucky colours being blue and green , Unlucky numbers are 4 and 9 while white is the unlucky colour .

Some Chinese Lunar Year facts :
• Chinese Lunar Year begins at sunset on the day of the second New Moon following the winter solstice ( 21 December ).
• One-sixth of the world ’ s population celebrates Chinese New Year / Lunar New Year .
• On the stroke of midnight on the new year every door and window in a Chinese house is opened to allow the old year to go out and bring in the new one .
• The most common Chinese New Year greeting is Guo Nian Hao which means Happy New Year
• For the start of their main holiday season , children receive red envelopes stuffed full of money instead of wrapped gifts .
• The Chinese New Year festival is celebrated for 15 days until the Lantern Festival which takes place on the night of the first full moon .
