At the moment his previous role as Chair of Hills Bushfire Management Committee has still to be finalised .
“ At an upcoming council meeting , councillors will choose a representative to sit on the Hills Bushfire Management Committee . At the first meeting of the Bush Fire Management Committee , delegates will then elect a chairperson of that committee ,” Peter said .
“ While council will choose a delegate , it will ultimately be up to the committee to choose the chair . We have a very talented council team and I know whether it is another councillor or myself , the councillor we choose to sit on this committee will do an incredible job for this community .”
None of his involvement in local politics would have been able to happen without the support of Peter ’ s wife , Nicole . She has been one of his strongest supporters and has seen her own family members involved in politics , with two of her grandparents taking on the role of councillors in their home shires
She is no stranger to getting involved herself , and while at university , Nicole was President of the Australian Liberal Student ’ s Federation . Peter puts a lot of his success down to Nicole ’ s support in the background and was happy to sing her praises .
“ My wife is my strongest supporter and my number one advisor . I owe a huge debt to her , and I believe , without her support , I wouldn ’ t be in this position .”
Moving forward , Mayor Gangemi has
a number of large projects to see through to completion , the biggest and most exciting one being the Waves Fitness and Aquatic Centre , the council ’ s biggest ever project , which he believes will bring benefits to the whole community .
“ This facility is going to be a gamechanger for Hills ’ residents , with a new Olympic-sized swimming pool with 10 lanes , a combined indoor 25 metre learn to swim pool and family leisure pool , swimming clubhouse , large gym , and fitness centre and much more ,” he commented .
As well as this huge project , he still has a focus on the small details and the needs and wants of the residents he is there to serve .
“ I want a council that is financially strong and listens closely to the community . I would like our council to fight against overdevelopment and continue to maintain the character of The Hills - this is what makes this area great . I want council to fast track improvements to roads and intersections , particularly in our new release areas and to roll out improvements to our parks , sports fields , playgrounds and footpaths . I also want to create the conditions to enable more local jobs to be created which will help boost the local economy .”
