International Children’s Games – New Taipei The International Children’s Games, established in 1968 and sanctioned by The IOC regularly bring together 12-15 year olds from cities around the world for games and a cultural festival. Its mission is to promote peace and goodwill through children and their participation in sports. The ICG and cultural festival is today the world’s largest multi-sport youth games and concentrates on four areas of excellence namely: sports, education, cultural exchange & economics. The games not only offer these young people an excellent competition but also break down cultural barriers through the many exchanges. For the tenth time, Kenya and Nairobi city in particular, through ICG-Kenya, participated in this year’s edition held in New Taipei. Four students from Hillcrest were among participants that represented the city of Nairobi in an event that had more than eighty cities from all over the world. From Hillcrest, Yvonne Kimani, Wacera Macharia and Sophie Shaw competed in athletics while Megan Van Houten was in swimming. Even though we narrowly missed out in the finals, these young girls did their personal best in all races. We also attended a cultural festival at the end of the championship where we were educated on traditional Taiwanese lifestyle. www.hillcrest.ac.ke 85
