Welcome to the UAB Hospital-Highlands Emergency Department . This booklet answers some common questions , in the hope of providing a sense of peace and direction during this stressful time . We also encourage you to reach out to our staff with any questions or concerns you have .
Your loved one is in good hands at the UAB Hospital-Highlands Emergency Department . We were the first in the Southeast to earn Level 1 Geriatric Emergency Department status from the American College of Emergency Physicians . Also , our nursing services are recognized for excellence with the Magnet designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center .
WHAT TO EXPECT
Visitors to the Emergency Department often ask , “ How long will I have to wait before being seen by a doctor ?” Due to many factors , we are unable to predict wait times . The doctor may order various tests and examinations , such as X-rays , CAT scan , lab work / blood draw , and EKG . Each of these requires varying amounts of time .
While you wait to be seen , you are welcome to come and go as you please . However , we cannot guarantee you a “ spot in line .” So , please be aware that if you leave and your name is called , your spot will be given to the next person in line . Also , you will be required to pass through our security checkpoints every time you enter the Emergency Department . This is for your safety and ours .
In addition to the doctor who will oversee your care , you will come into contact with a variety of UAB Medicine staff while you are here . This chart shows the scrub colors worn by various types of medical staff .
