-Spain-
S pain has some of Europe’s wildest mountain & coastal areas. Our chosen
destinations are in Andalucia in southern Spain in the Grazalema National
Park and Alpujarras in the Sierra Nevada. We also have 2 self-guided walk-
ing holidays on the Catalan coast, bordering the Pyrenees and in Costa
Brava which are detailed in our Provence and Med section on page 30.
Andalucia is a large autonomous region of southern Spain which includes
much of Spain's southern Mediterranean Coast and the Sierra Nevada
Mountain range. It was under Moorish rule from the 8th-15th centuries, a
legacy that shows in its beautiful architecture.
Our Alpujarras Valley Walk lies within the Sierra Nevada National Park in
central Andalucia and is a beautiful destination for a warm weather walk-
ing holiday in Spring or Autumn. It is designed to give you a taster of the
region, including walking in the wonderful Poquiera gorge and in the off
the beaten track area around Cadiar. The choice of walks on most days
allow walkers of different abilities to enjoy the area. A visit to this part of
Andalucia in Spain would not be complete without a day in the historic city
of Granada and a trip to the amazing Alhambra palace.
The Grazalema National Park is a stunning location for a self-guided walk-
ing holiday with spectacular limestone and dolomite crags that rise dra-
matically above beautiful gorges, the most spectacular being the Garganta
Verde, 'Green Throat'. Grazalema was the first Spanish National Park to be
designated in Andalucia, following its recognition as a Biosphere Reserve
by UNESCO. Sierra de Grazalema has an exceptionally rich wildlife with
Europe's largest population of Griffon Vultures. Grazalema has a wet
season which helps create an oasis of green among the Andalucian land-
scapes with an extraordinary array of plant life.

-Slovenia-
S lovenia is a mainly mountainous country in southern Europe with a
small dispersed population, rich biodiversity and plenty of traditions.
The mountains are formed mainly of limestone giving rise to many
characteristic features such as gorges, plateaux, cliffs and caves.
Slovenia has a small but very pretty Mediterranean Coast. We have two
self-guided holidays in this brochure. Our Slovenian Explorer is a multi-
centre based trip which makes its way from the mountains to the sea
via such classic sights as Bled, the Julian Alps and the historic towns of
Piran and Idrija. This holiday requires a car.
Our second holiday is a linear trail through the Triglav National Park.
There are also 3 circular walks to discover more of the different areas
including the Karavanke mountains, Julian Alps, Lake Bled and Lake
Bohinj, as well as the local way of life. This is a harder walk reaching
over 2000m in altitude.
