Najac
Najac is on a steep promontory with
an impressive fortress situated 200
metres above the Aveyron river
offering breathtaking views. The
fortress is a fine example of military
architecture from the middle-ages.
At the west end of the village is the
13th century Church of Saint John
the Evangelist, one of the first gothic
churches in the province which contains a processionary cross from that
century. See page 48 for Historic
Villages & Valleys of the Tarn.
Château-Chalon
Château-Chalon is the birthplace of the
famous Vin Jaune ("yellow wine") made
from late harvest grapes. Perched on a
cliff in the first fold of the Jura Mountains, the village has wonderful views
across the vineyards. The village grew up
around the castle, that it gets its name
from, and the Benedictine abbey, but all
that remains of these are the keep and
the Romanesque church of Saint Pierre.
See pages 54 & 56 for Jura Wine Trail
and Jura Discovery.
Castelnaud-la-Chapelle
10km from Sarlat, Castelnaud-laChapelle overhangs the confluence
between Dordogne and Céou rivers in
an exceptional landscape opposite the
beautiful villages of Beynac-et-Cazenac
and La Roque-Gageac. Chateau
Castelnaud, with its museum of medieval warfare, is the most visited castle
in southern France. The village itself
with its typical Périgord architecture is
also worth discovering. See page 45
for Delights of Historic Dordogne.
