Best of Medieval Burgundy O Guided Walking ur guided walking holiday in southern Burgundy explores a rich landscape full of historic treasures. Medieval chateaux such as those at Berzé and Brancion, historic churches and pretty medieval villages are set in beautiful rolling countryside carpeted with Chardonnay vines, pasture and forests. A number of rocky outcrops punctuate the vineyards such as the celebrated “roche de Solutré” important for its pre-historic human activity. These landmarks provide exceptional viewing points to admire the surrounding countryside. The Burgundy region is well-known for its fine wine and gastronomic food, a reputation that is richly deserved. You will have plenty of opportunity to sample both during your walking holiday. Walks: day-by-day Day 1: Arrival – Welcome, pick up from Lyon. Day 2: Berzé Village & Chateau, Cluny Gentle introduction to some of the finest historic monuments of the region. Explore the historic village of Berzé la Ville with its pretty stone houses decorated with flowers. Afterwards we'll ascend to the top of the Roche Coche for fantastic views, before reaching the impressive 13th century chateau Berzé le Chatel with its 3 defensive walls and 13 towers. Return by the chateau des Moines. After, visit the historic town of Cluny, which grew up around the Benedictine Abbey founded in 910AD. Enjoy looking around medieval properties that line the pretty streets. 14km, +280m Day 3: Roche de Solutré A great day’s walk which starts by going to the top of one of the most important landmarks in the area - the Roche de Solutré, site of pre-historic activities (dating back 35,000 years) providing amazing views of the surrounding countryside. After, beautiful walk through vines and forest. 17km, +400m Day 4: Chapaize Our walk starts from Cormatin with its beautiful 17th century chateau. The circuit passes through undulating countryside of vines and fields to reach the remarkable villages of Chapaize, Ougy and Bissy. Chapaize has a wonderful 11th century church. 17km, +200m ♦ Walking through pretty historic villages with medieval castles and Romanesque churches ♦ A picturesque landscape of rolling hills & valleys covered in vines and rocky outcrops providing great views as far as the Alps ♦ Wine tasting of the local chardonnay and visiting historic monuments ♦ Visiting the historic town of Cluny with the remains of its influential abbey Day 5: Hills around Azé A wonderful walk which explores the vines around the historic villages of Igé and Azé before climbing gently through timeless landscapes of beautiful pastures and deciduous forests into the hills.
