Eating disorder is one of the examples of mental disorder. A person is considered
to have an eating disorder when they experience a severe disturbance in their
eating behavior. Most people associate eating disorder with people that want to be
skinny. However, it is way more than just your eating behavior.
Anorexia nervosa, better known as anorexia, is when a person thinks a lot about the
food that they eat and how it will affect their body weight and shape. For some
people, reducing their food portions or even starving themselves is a way to have
more control of their life and to ease tension. The beauty standards of the society
nowadays are one of the reasons why most people that experience this are girls.
Other than social influence, having a family member that has the genetics for
anorexia higher the possibility of getting it. Like all mental disorders, life changes
and traumas are also one of the causes of anorexia.
Patricia Alizka, Early 2017
One of my friends, Patricia, suffered from anorexia when she first came to the school
last year. I remember her being very skinny and always shivering in class. She
skipped a lot of school because she has to stay in the hospital. I felt so bad. But
when we entered year 10, she drastically changed. Slowly, she recovered from her
anorexia. I asked her if she would be willing to share her story. Fortunately, she said
yes.
