Last year, 19,700 women visited their prenatal control in hospitals
and Health Centers on a timely basis; 25 died when they did not
go to the doctor during their process. Unfortunately, in these cases
the woman did not go to a pre-pregnancy, prenatal care or did
not take control of the same. There are women who are in their
fourth or third pregnancy and have not attended prenatal care
where risk factors are identified.
National guidelines indicate that a woman should go for less than
eight visits during pregnancy to rule out or confirm conditions
such as diabetes, hypertension, heart or lung disease, as well as
malformations in the baby. Salas Verdugo considered that
mothers do not go to the doctor for lack of information or difficult
social conditions.
Since last year, the Ministry of Health has developed a new model
of care in brigades that run house-to-house communities in
Mexicali, Tijuana and Ensenada, with the intention of detecting
women of childbearing age and those who are pregnant and who
are not under medical supervision. "They are raising a census and
where they find a woman of childbearing age from 14 to 55 years
are told the risk factors they can have in case of pregnancy. In
addition, there are five modules specialized in pregestational care,
one located in the General Hospital of Mexicali. Pregnant
teenagers, he said, are the most reluctant to go to the doctor
