Who really are The Waterboys?
J: They are a duo of USQ students that have a love for
all things Uni Games, water, and the great outdoors…
feature
D: Since, you know, we can’t actually play any of the
sports, our bodies are in the right shape for this.
J: Yeah, apparently a requirement is you have to be
good at the sport that you are doing. So instead,
what we’ve done is created a bunch of games we
think should be played at Uni Games.
D: These are going to be running during the week of Uni
Games, and they are going to be a whole lot of fun
and lots of people can participate. We’ll film ourselves
and anyone else playing the games and they’ll be up
online for everyone else to watch at home.
Can you tell us what might be involved in these
Games, or is it all a bit of a secret?
D: Without giving too much away, it involves some
two minute noodles. There’s going to be some
marshmallows involved as well. Some will be a bit out
of people’s comfort zones, but it’s all fun and games
and should be a good time.
J: Some of the games aren’t exactly sports, but can be
viewed as week-nightly television. Most of the ideas
we’ve had aren’t original, but we’ve added a little
something of our own to all of them.
It sounds like you will be busy with a lot of games
during the week, will you actually be performing
your duties as USQ Waterboys?
D: Our duty is more about making sure everyone else
is in the spirit of the Uni Games; we want to bring
out that competitive edge and challenge them. Yes,
a lot of the games do involve food instead of drinks,
but given we can’t play the sports, food is something
we’re both very good at.
J: Imagine if a golf caddy did motivational speeches,
danced and sung, making everyone on the golf
course happy… that’s kind of what we are. You could
change our names to the golf caddies who dance
and sing and motivate everyone, but we thought
that title was just too long, so we ended up with The
Waterboys. Water keeps people going, and that’s
what we’re here for.
Given that you are Waterboys, it’s likely that
people will be looking to you to quench their thirst
on their respective sports grounds. Do you have
any hydration tips for the athletes competing?
D: Yeah, just drink lots of water… but not too much or
you’ll get a stitch.
J: I guess we aren’t experts in this field.
You might not be experts in this field, but you are
expert university students. Do you at least have
any study tips for the students playing at Northern
Uni Games this year?
D: Don’t just make promises, actually get in there and
figure out how you are going to get better, whether it
is a better study environment or being more organised.
J: My tip is to identify your biggest procrastination habit,
then find a buddy who can keep you away from that
habit. For me, it’s TV shows and video games, so my
friends make sure I stay away from them when the
going gets tough.
Do you have a message for the athletes,
supporters and organisers of Team USQ?
J: Take pride in the phoenix. It’s a great university to be
a part of, and everyone really gets behind you. We’ll
be there to cheer you on, so take pride in what you
are doing!
It is quite apparent that Dan and Jordan have a lot of
fun planned for the Northern Uni Games this year.
