The symposium on the Social Costs of Inadequate Education has important information that applies to both minorities and the rest of the general population:
A high school graduate will make over $260,000 more in their lifetime than a high school drop-out, as well as a 9.2 year longer life expectancy.
If the high school graduation rate for men 20-60 was increased by one percent, the U.S. would save $1.4 billion/year in reduced crime-related costs.
Of all U.S. grade-school students, on average black children have lower academic ranking than their white classmates. On average black children are also at 40% early childhood prep level before while white children are at 57% when it comes to school-readiness.
Educational attainment, which measures High School Graduation rates, successful GEDs, and college enrollment and completion, is on average 38% for black children and young adults, while white students score 51% nationally.
Schools with high-minority proportions on average show higher enrollment of poorer students than predominently white schools. Graduation rates for inner city schools averaged about 58% in 2001 where suburban schools averaged 73%. 6
